Kagoshima Deals & Passes for Foreign Visitors (July 2026)
A local's roundup of the discount tickets and campaigns actually worth using right now — including one that disappears on July 31.

🎫 The ¥1,000 all-day pass (sales have ended)
- Covers JR local trains between Kagoshima-Chuo and Sengan-en Station, the Kagoshima tram network, city buses, and the Kagoshima City View sightseeing bus loop — all on one ticket, unlimited rides for a full day.
- Adult ¥1,000 / child ¥500 — remarkable value versus paying for each ride separately, and it comes with discount coupons for Sengan-en, the Shoko Shuseikan museum, the Ijinkan foreign residences, and Kagoshima City Aquarium.
- Sold only through the "my route" smartphone app (Kyushu MaaS), and only during the March 14 – July 31, 2026 sales window — this is a limited-time campaign, not a permanent pass.
- This ticket's sales period ended July 31, 2026, so it can no longer be purchased. Use the CUTE pass below instead — it covers similar routes with unlimited rides.

🚋 CUTE Pass — buy before the price rise
- Unlimited rides on Kagoshima's tram, city buses (including the City View sightseeing loop), and the Sakurajima ferry — the widest coverage of any pass here, and the only one that includes the ferry.
- Comes with discount coupons for 10+ attractions, including Sengan-en and Kagoshima City Aquarium.
- Prices rise on August 1, 2026 alongside the citywide tram fare revision — see the table below.
- Buy at tourist information counters around the city and on Sakurajima, or at some hotels — no reservation or app needed.

Local tip: this is the pass to get if your trip includes a Sakurajima day trip — the ferry ride alone makes it worthwhile.
Foreign passport holders only
🚄 JR Kyushu Rail Pass — for overseas visitors
- Unlike everything else on this page, this pass is reserved for travelers visiting Japan on a "Temporary Visitor" entry stamp with an overseas-issued passport — carry your passport whenever you use it.
- Covers unlimited rides on JR Kyushu limited express and local trains within your chosen area, plus the Kyushu Shinkansen between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo.
- Two area options include Kagoshima — see the table below. (The Northern Kyushu pass covers Fukuoka, Oita, Kumamoto, Nagasaki and Saga only, and does not include Kagoshima.)
- Buy online in advance, through an overseas travel agent, or at a JR Kyushu "Midori-no-Madoguchi" ticket counter once you're in Japan.

- Short-term foreign visitors can shop tax-free (consumption tax exempt) once total purchases at one store reach ¥5,000 or more before tax — bring your passport, it's checked at the register or a dedicated tax-free counter.
- AMU Plaza Kagoshima, directly connected to Kagoshima-Chuo Station, has a wide mix of tax-free shops (including MUJI) — handy for a last stop before your train or bus out.
- Yamakataya, Kagoshima's long-standing department store in Tenmonkan, also runs a tax-free service counter for visitors.
Booking closed July 31, 2026
🏨 Summer Kagoshima lodging discount (booking closed)
- A Kagoshima Prefecture campaign ("Minami-no-Takarabako") discounts hotel and ryokan stays by up to 20%, capped at ¥5,000 per person per night (plus up to ¥3,000 extra for remote-island stays), for stays through the August 1, 2026 checkout.
- Open to all travelers, including those from overseas — but the official site is Japanese-only. The easiest way in for non-Japanese speakers is booking through an English-friendly OTA (such as Rakuten Travel) that lists the discount, or asking your hotel directly if it's enrolled.
- You needed to show ID (a passport works) at check-in, and bookings had to be completed by July 31, 2026 — this window is now closed.
Local tip: bookings for this round have closed. Kagoshima Prefecture has run similar discount campaigns before (winter/summer rounds), so check the official site for a possible next round.
