Sakurajima, the city & a taste of Aira

The sweet spot. Base yourself in the center, see the volcano up close, eat well, and slip into the countryside — with almost no time lost to travel.

Getting there

From Haneda · by air

Land at Kagoshima Airport and take the limousine bus straight to Tenmonkan or Kagoshima-Chuo (~40 min). Skip the rental car — the center is walkable and the tram covers the rest.

From Fukuoka · by train

Shinkansen (Sakura / Mizuho) to Kagoshima-Chuo, ~1h20m. Your hotel is a walk or one tram stop away.

Day 1

Arrival & Sakurajima at sunset

    Check in, city center

    Drop your bags near Tenmonkan so you never waste a minute commuting.

  2. 16:30

    Sakurajima ferry

    A 15-minute ride to the live volcano. Catch the Yunohira Observatory for the best view back over the bay.

  3. 19:00

    Tenmonkan dinner

    Kurobuta pork shabu-shabu, then shirokuma shaved ice for dessert.

Day 2

Volcano up close & the waterfront

    Sakurajima Island View bus

    The loop bus past lava fields and free foot baths. No car needed.

  2. 13:00

    Sengan-en garden

    A historic garden framed by Sakurajima across the water. Tea with a view.

    Dolphin Port and a seaside hot spring as the volcano glows.

Day 3

Aira nature & easy departure

  1. 09:00

    Aira day trip

    Ryumon Falls and Kagoshima Shrine — quiet nature just 30 minutes from the city.

  2. 12:00

    Last bites near the station

    Back to Kagoshima-Chuo for souvenirs and a final bowl of ramen.

  3. 14:00

    Depart

    Relaxed, unhurried, nothing skipped.

Getting home

Limousine bus back to Kagoshima Airport (~40 min) — leave the center about 2.5 hours before your flight. By train, the Shinkansen leaves right from Kagoshima-Chuo.
