🚌 By limousine bus — the easy way in
- Kagoshima Airport sits about 40km from the city, so there's no train — the limousine bus, run jointly by Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu (Iwasaki Group), is the standard way in for almost everyone.
- Board at bus stop No.8, right outside the arrivals hall. It's ¥1,500 one-way for adults (¥750 for children), and takes roughly 40–55 minutes depending on traffic.
- The bus pulls into the Kagoshima-Chuo Station terminal building first (Nangoku Kotsu bus terminal, 1st floor), then continues on to Tenmonkan — listen for your stop if the station is where you're headed.
- No reservations, and buses run frequently through the day. Buy a ticket at the machine or counter by the bus stop, pay as you board, or tap a contactless card — all work.
Local tip: keep your flight number handy — staff at the airport information counter can tell you the next departure time if you've just missed one, and there's almost always another within the hour.

🚗 Renting a car at the airport
- Toyota, Times, Nippon Rent-A-Car, ORIX, and several smaller companies all have counters at Kagoshima Airport, each with a short shuttle from the arrivals curb to their lot.
- It's the easiest way to reach places the train and buses don't cover well — Kirishima's shrines and hot springs, Ibusuki's sand baths, Chiran's samurai town — all of which are much more convenient by car.
- You'll need an International Driving Permit (Geneva Convention) or an official Japanese translation of your license, arranged before you arrive — Japan doesn't issue either on the spot.
- Book ahead if you can, especially around Golden Week, Obon, and New Year, when the airport counters can run out of cars.
Local tip: if your trip is just Kagoshima-Chuo and the city center, skip the car — parking downtown is limited and paid, and the bus or tram covers it easily. Rent only if you're heading out to the countryside.
🚕 By taxi
- About 40 minutes and roughly ¥11,000–12,000 one-way, plus expressway tolls if the driver takes the highway — it's a long, metered ride from the airport, so treat this as an estimate.
- The taxi stand is right beside the bus stop; no reservation needed, and it's the fastest door-to-door option if you're not watching the budget.
